September 11, 2001: One Perspectiveby Randine Lewis, Lic.Ac., Ph.D. I treat infertility with Chinese Medicine. I help many couples conceive children naturally, which requires tremendous diligence, perseverance and trust on their part. A few of my patients quit their treatments after September 11, 2001, because they did not want to bring a child into this world. I needed to make some sense of this tragic event to justify my work with infertility. This is what I believe to be true. The pursuit of a child is borne of a deep longing of Universal Life to evolve. This evolution is not only physical, but consciousness itself. Throughout the ages, periods of human growth were almost always preceded by tragedy, strife, revolutions, wars… As we as a people evolve further, there will be crises. I believe that by necessity more advanced souls will be born, and that perhaps our struggles to conceive them are their ways of preparing their new homes. Isn’t it rather grandiose of us to believe that we have any control over the requirements of Universal evolution? “And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, Physical manifestation can occur only when the conditions for the soul have been met to allow its advancement in this life. We can only manipulate our physiology; we can’t control the expression of Life itself. It is my belief that this is how God expresses life; how “He” breathes the breath of life into the developing cells which become fetuses and babies and human beings. Harmony must be created in our physical environment, our physiologic condition, our mental, emotional and spiritual state. Our ultimate job is to create an environment in which our own consciousness is allowed to align with the will of our Creator. When these conditions have been met, it is then that we must accept that if we are to become parents, we will. This may be the only situation in life which we can’t control other than our own death. Sometimes the most powerful forms of healing come through this ultimate state of surrender. When I risked losing my son, I was brought to my knees in despair. When I felt like this situation was beyond my capacity to bear, it was the surrender to this process which allowed a space where deep healing could take place. I believe that that was my part – to let go of the outcome. Although I wanted that child more than anything else at that time, it was my realization that I had no control over whether he was allowed to live that allowed my own healing. I am reminded of the prayer, God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The things we must accept are our genetic constitution - there are certain aspects of our physical state which are not amenable to change. We cannot change the past and we cannot change anybody else. We can, however, change our health and our environment in the present– what we put into our bodies, the environments in which we experience stress, and our mental and emotional states. This is a courageous adventure - not an undertaking for the weak of spirit. The wisdom comes in the surrender to this truth – that after we have done all that we have control over (our health – through diet, exercise, supplementation, alternative or conventional medicine), we must remember to breathe, to recall that we still have this present moment where we can allow Life to express itself through us, however it may. “… You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. |
