The Diva Speaks:
The Case for War

Back to The Family Diva Speaks
by Tracy Morris
The Diva has struggled for some time now with the question of whether to present her opinion on what is (in her opinion) the most impacting issue in our world at this present time: war. Since the atrocious acts on 9/11/2001, many have felt less free to express certain opinions, with good reason. The Diva is one of these many. As the United States approaches the Great Hallmark Card Event of St. Valentine's Day (February 14), she has decided to take this opportunity to reveal some of her thoughts on the antithesis of the day's intentions.

First, I'd like to clearly state something which echoed over and over in my mind following the latest "State of the Union" speech by George W. Bush:

The word is pronounced "noo-klee-ur" — not "noo-ku-lar".

Now that we've given our English language lesson for the day... here are a few other simple words to ponder.

War is wrong.

More children will be killed if war goes on unabated.
More from The Family Diva
Those who debate either of those comments as being relative are coming from the following starting points:

  • Ignorance
  • Fear
  • Hatred
To wit, my feeble attempt to address those starting points:

Ignorance

Life is not easy, especially for anyone who is trying to do The Right Thing. The Diva knows that in between meeting your own needs and the needs of those you love and those who pay you, there's scarcely time to smell even the garbage, let alone the roses. Being busy can be a disease if its essence is to wear blinders.

We are easily saturated with information from every direction. In our scrambling to get through another day or week, it is simplest to rely on whatever information source is part of our rote existence.

There is no more crucial time than one such as this when we must step out of the everyday and check another source for corroboration. Why not just trust that those same old reliable faces are being completely forthright and forthcoming?

The world's most powerful individual (before reading on, just dwell a bit in your mind on the concept of a single human holding more power than any group on Earth,) has come to your door and asked you to walk past your loved ones, step outside, and be prepared to die. Do you know why? Rather than take on the awesome task herself of shedding detailed light on this scenario, The Diva refers you to those whose time is spent doing just that:

To simplify what could be a complex educational process, here is a source from which you can then expand to more: http://www.democracynow.org/

Fear

We fear what we do not know or understand. We fear what we cannot readily and immediately control.

We fear other people. Sometimes, this makes sense -- fear can save lives. Often, it does not. When fear does not make sense, it is nothing short of powerfully destructive. The real problem lies in the fact that we do not always know whether our fear is the sensible kind or not.

The only way to know is to educate oneself, with as many resources as possible. See "Ignorance" above.

Hatred

Anyone who believes that making a life-altering decision based on the emotion of hatred is acceptable -- raise your hand, please.

Okay, those of you who actually claim "hatred" as a valid point of origin can step aside. The Diva is far too busy vacuuming dog hair to try and convince you otherwise; we'll just trust in karma as far as you're concerned.

For the rest of you, in numbers The Diva assumes are legion: I again suggest that the problem here is that we often do not recognize in ourselves the point at which we've made hatred-based decisions. We are expert justifiers and rationalizers, probably more so in this enlightened day and age than any previous. The concept of "spin" is so pervasive now that our heads are doing just that...

There is almost nothing as painful as looking in the mirror, pointing a finger at that face staring back, and stating, "You're really doing this to be mean, aren't you? You really just can't stand that other person, and it really ticks you off that they have what you want." Oh, the shame...

Again, The Diva refers you to the "Ignorance" section of this rant, for looking out another window, a different one than you usually glance toward, could very simply show you an entirely different world.

Imagine a world without ignorance, fear, and hatred. If you cannot imagine it based on what you call the relevance of all such things, then this war's for you.

Finally, The Diva first considered wrapping up this piece with a comment in the direction of "these are just my thoughts, my opinion." Fortunately, that is not the case. These thoughts are shared by many, some of whom have sacrificed much to be heard. Anyone who questions that report would do well to keep their eyes and ears open on Saturday, February 15, 2003.

Oh, and of course, Happy Valentine's Day!
